Nebraska Fishing - Review of Bugchaser Insect Repellent Wristbands
The first one I'll touch base on here is the Bugchaser, an insect repellent wristband. (the rest of the products that were sent deserve their own separate product review and will appear over the next few days)
NEWS
The first time I used it was on a pretty calm night. The humidity was high and so was the temp. Perfect conditions for the large swarms of black flies that fly in flocks around my favorite lake. These gnats always bother me more than mosquitoes. Especially towards the twilight hours when they seem to fly around my face making it impossible to really enjoy the evening. Regular bug repellents don't seem to do the trick.
The bugs made their move, but the pleasant citrus like smell made them keep their distance. The closest any of the got to me was about a rod length away. Pretty impressive. made even more so when a buddy of mine was using deep woods off and had to swat more than the occasional mosquito.
The field test wasn't concluded with that trip. A few days later, I opted to let The Old Man try it. Instead of wearing it on his wrist, he slapped it around his adjustable head strap of his cap and went seven hours bug free.
I even brought my own mother in for the unsuspecting field test. She is allergic to black biting gnats something fierce and was altogether skeptical about the wristband. After a few moments of cajoling, she slipped it on and the little gnats left her alone. This is a feat that is tantamount to a hungry dog bypassing a juicy steak in front of his nose. In all my outdoor years, I have never seen anything work as well for my mother as the wristband.
A few more outings in different conditions produced similar results. Personally, I hope to see the BUGCHASER brand of wristbands appearing on the local stores shelves. I hate using bug spray, because invariably, no matter how careful I am, it always seems some of the aerosol gets into my eyes. This product eliminates this and smells a whole lot better.
Plus it's reusable.
The package says it might lose its effectiveness after 4 hours but in all the field tests done, the product lasted much longer. If you use it less than four hours, place it back in its bag to prolong its effectiveness.
The Mosquito's Killjoy

A flea collar for people! That bright idea led Frank Scarangella to invent the Bugchaser bracelet, which is guaranteed - well, almost - to keep mosquitoes at bay without having to spritz on the DEET, the chemical repellent. "It has a sweetish kind of smell," Mr. Scarangella said of the bright yellow plastic band, whose active ingredients are d-Limonene (an extract of lime peels) and two furanones. Although some wearers say the scent is as repugnant to humans as to bugs, once a bracelet is snapped on, it repels insects for about 60 hours. "It works because it disguises the carbon oxide that comes out of your body - 75 percent of the mosquitoes find you because they smell the carbon oxide," said Mr. Scarangella. The Bugchaser's appeal is that it does not have to be reapplied - the reason that Mr. Scarangella developed it. One summer, his son returned home from camp covered with bites, evidently too busy playing to bother spraying.
